Well, I've taken the plunge - sort of.  Got a business license, business cards, and a Facebook page -(https://www.facebook.com/katheyscustomquilts)

and we'll see what happens.   Not sure I want a lot to happen - but here goes.  What it's all about is making small (twin or smaller) custom quilts with embroidery embellishment to order.  I wouldn't mind doing one a month or so - but don't want it to be so successful (fat chance!) that I can't do what I want in between.  Talk about conflicted!  Anyway -- suggestions gratefully received!

i did go to your etsy page. i have a friend, well actually i have several friends who fb, but one particular friend learned about how ex from nasty divorce who wanted no contact even w kids was able to get inside pesonal blocks to track down & locate family who he had walked away from. of course they are all on fb. people who are tech savvy, and that is just about everyone but me, can get into anything they want to on fb or just about any forum and ferret out personal info that is supposedly hidden behind security walls. most of my friends & acquaintences who do fb have had so many issues w their emails being taken over, spam generated by thier contact list, having to change their email accounts etc several times to get out from under tainted email account. i don't have time for messes like that. so, i keep my online presence quiet and limited and as annonymous as i can. and i check both hubs, son & i via several diff search engines and people search things. we are on a few, son on everything. in fact he and a guy w same name usually fill first several pages of google, zapmeta, webcrawler etc ...all the opensource software programs he has written & launched, ipad apps he has out there etc, plus his diff online accounts. but his dad and i are hard to find w/o know something personal about us. so, i guess i understand about ypur comment re:how ypu feel about how much ypu want to expose yourself on fb. maybe just keep the fb account to hive you access to poss commissions fr fb users? i have never ever read anything about breach of privacy or security for etsy buyers or sellers. seems a safe place. friend thought about selling thru it also. you know there is a etsy group here on MQP. lots of info and helpful tips from the group members.

Rogue - Try my Etsy page - search for KatheysCustomQuilts - all run together.  Unfortunately, it doesn't let me do quite what you suggest regards samples, but that's what I've tried to convey - and actually, the four quilts that are visible are all available if someone really wanted them.  I'm conflicted about the facebook page -- not sure it was worth it - since I really don't want anyone to be able to get to my private page - just to the business.  Unfortunately, the technology doesn't really let me "see" what everyone else sees.  True on Etsy, too - at least as far as I can tell.  If you click on "About" it explains it all - but that assumes someone gets that far.

good luck w your new business kathryn. the way you use the embroidery patterns so well incorporated into your quilt designs, your quilts are always so beautiful it will be difficult, i think, for you not to be swamped w orders! i have tried the fb link. i am not a fb member & your site won't let the "public" in. maybe change your settings? would love to visit your page.
