I lost my job in April and have decided to try and make extra money by sewing and teaching. I also am just starting a store on Etsy which is called CharleneHsCorner. Things are not happening as fast as I would like. Do any of you have any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks so much,

Charlene in WS North Carolina

I have had a lot of luck selling on ebay.  I haven't listed anything on etsy yet.  (I certainly spend a lot of money on ebay and etsy!)

you have my sympathy. i know how tough times can get. i make totes, purses, baby, kitchen and decorative items. i went to stores that sold those type items and showed them what i had . they bought an outright supply from me. gave me a check at that time. when they start getting low, they call and i bring them more. it's a great  situation. would be worth a try for you.

Start with an overall marketing plan...Do you know what sells? What quantity can you make and what is your profit/loss margin?  Then start looking for free outlets.  Advertise on your Facebook page, get photos out everywhere.  Let your friends, family, neighbors, kid's teachers, etc. all know what you are doing.  This isn't really the buying season. Most June wedding presents, graduation presents, etc. have been purchased. Start working toward fall and Christmas.  Remember in retail, you need to be thinking at least 2 seasons and most times a year ahead.

I don't know much about Esty. but you might check to see if the town you live in has a local craft mall. not like Michaels or Hobby Lobby. this is hand made items and a few other things..

we have one here. booths can be rented fairly cheaply and you put whatever you want - mostly  handmade items - in your booth. they sell it for you and take care of the taxes and all. there are folks who have had booths there for many years. so they must do fairly well. it would be worth checking into there.
