Hello everyone!  I just came back here after going through over three years of a major dry spell.  I can't believe I ever stopped quilting!  I even stopped reading quilt magazines! I went back to school for a couple of years and it took up all of my time.  I just hope I can get the bug back!  I've so missed quilting, yet I am finding it hard to accept the fact that I can do what I want now that school is over!  And of course I'm overwhelmed with ideas and don't know where to start!  Since I'm so out of practice with my free-motion quilting, I was thinking about making a small (9x12) whole cloth piece.  That way I can practice the quilting as well as practice my binding.  Anyway, there is so much to explore here now that there are so many groups!  I see that the Featherweight group is still here...I had wanted a Featherweight for ages, and my mom bought me a really nice one in hopes of getting me excited about quilting again.  That was two years ago and I have yet to plug it in!  Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting to know people again!

Bridget, they are mechanical so there is really nothing to break. I was afraid of mine when I first got her and the tension was off and I did not know quite how to make it right.  I took it to my local sewing machine repair man and he oiled and cleaned her and set the tension and she purred like a kitten.  He even showed me how to correct the tension.  I was turning the wheel to much instead of small increments.  So I just make sure I keep her oiled and greased and she purrs just like new.  I even bought a quilters foot and a 1/4 inch foot from this website.http://www.singer-featherweight.com/.  Graham was very helpful in telling me what kind of needles to use also.

I love your ideas, Riana.  I actually already have a cheater panel.....just gotta dig around for it.  I started it several years ago so I could practice free motion quilting.  And what a great idea!  Postcard sized samples!  That's perfect for me right now! As far as the Featherweight goes, I don't understand why I'm so nervous about it!  I have a baby Lock Crafter's Choice as well as a Baby Lock Quilter's Choice Professional and I can take them apart without any worries.  But it's like the Featherweight is handling a diamond when I'm used to handling a cubic zirconia!

Hi Bridget, it's nice see your colour wheel back on the page again!

l wonder if it may be less pressure if you start your freemotion efforts off with a printed "cheater" panel, rather than a whole cloth ( so much like a blank canvas). Or perhaps make up a series of postcard sized samplers to keep in a binder for reference...just try some of Leah Day's video posts for inspiration:)
