A lovely day - insdie to sew or outside to read?

It is an incredible day out today - sunny, blue sky and no humidity. So the question to myself is - do I go outside and read or stay inside and sew? O what a challenge!

On another note, I decided to tidy my sewing room. Bad idea, sort of because I found things that I have started and have yet to finish. I made a list, and I have 17 unfinished projects. And that doesn't count the quilt top that I finished on Monday, nor the two quilting classes that I am currently taking. O boy, do I…

Mini Sewing Vacation with daughter Becky in Plano Texas

Took some time off from the Christmas quilt project to visit my daughter, Becky in Plano Texas where I assisted (I did the pinning and the ironing) in the creation of this fantastic t-shirt quilt.  Becky and I have pieced quilts together in the past but this is the first quilt she did entirely on her own from design and planning to quilting.  Brava, sweetheart!  You are a…

Thread Opinions wanted

Okay everyone, I would like to know what you folks on this blog like to stitch your quilts together with? What type of thread do you think is the best and what strength, for sewing together the quilt top?

Sunday Evening

Wow, another week-end gone already.   I thought when I retired time might slow down, but it hasn't so far.  The week-ends are usually so busy I don't have much time to do any sewing, but I'm looking forward to getting back into the sewing room tomorrow and starting on a pattern or two I found in a quilt magazine.   Summers are great because hubby goes golfing and I have three days a week that I'm pretty much on my own and can sew to my heart's content.   And I love going through quilt…

Mother's heart break

My heart breaks for a friend of mine. She has had more trials than any person should go through and now has lost her 25 year old son in the seas of Alaska.  For whatever reason he ended up overboard and the coast guard was unable to find him.  You can find more information at this link. No one should lose their child first.…

Old Sewing Machines

I have 3 or 4 old sewing machines that people have given me.   They all need cleaned and probably some work done on them.   Does anyone know of any groups or charities that could fix these machines and put them to good use??   I would be happy to give them to anyone that could use them.

Too many scraps!

I have been sewing quilt tops since about 1988 because my Grandmother had been a quilter, and at the time I thought it would be nice to make one quilt and follow in her footsteps - foolish, foolhardy and I should have known better. Since then, I have a scrappy pile (piles) which I try to reduce every now and again. Unfortunately, I can get easily side-tracked by a new pattern or a new idea or even the lovely sunshine.

So presently and at last count, I have 17 UFOs. Yikes! I need to…

I NEED to make a scrappy quilt.   Why do I have so much fabric that I don't know what to do with??   I find so many patterns I want to try and I check out my fabric stash and decide I don't have what I need to make that quilt top.  So then I just putz around and get nothing truly accomplished.  Therefore, my next project is going to be a scrappy quilt.   Just cut up a lot of unused fabric and sew it together and hope for the best!!!   Well, no, I suppose I should have some sort of plan, or…

Still too many scraps

I am new to this blogging thing, and I so now I will try to add some pictures of some of my quilted projects. Most are unfinished, some only needing a sleeve to be added to the back, others need the binding sewn down. This quilt is not quite finished (binding), and as you can see it is a scrappy quilt. My kindred group and I made a flower pot quilt, and they all gave me the left over scraps. This is the quilt with the left overs. I added some of my own fabric, and I tried to add a machine…

On the road and back home!

Just returned home from giving a lecture for The Friendship Quilt Guild in Hagarstown, MD. My drive down was 5.5 hours and gave me some good time to think and work out some new designs!

Prairie Points, a tutorial.

When it comes to those finishing touches that make a quilt stand out,one of my favorites is adding prairie points instead of binding. Here's how I added them to my whole cloth quilt.

First, you DO have to plan for this in advance, because you must leave 1" of unquilted area around the perimeter of your quilt. This is because they…

Too many scraps

I have spent the last few days sorting and tidying my sewing room. I think at last count, I have 12 UFOs. I will take some pictures and post - one of these days.

I am currently working on a charity quilt (most of my quilts are donated). This gives me the where-with-all to try something new, either a technique, colour combination or pattern. The quilts tend to be crib-size so if I get to a point where I don't like what I am doing, it can quickly be finished. Then sometimes, you have a…
