The "Burrito" Quilt

My daughter turns 14 next month and after being around fibers arts all of her life, she's finally showed some interest in learning to sew. Cue a choir of angels singing the "Hallelujah Chorus!" I was beginning to despair that the long line of seamstresses/crafters would come to a screaming halt with my only child.

Anyways, her Spring Break is the end of the next month and we're beginning to plan what we're going to do (I forsee a trip into Washington, DC for some museum…

2012 Quest Completed

To update everyone.  I am glad to say that I finished all 120 UFOs for 2012.  I finished on December 31, 2:00p.m. with the very last one, including the binding.  i was so very thrilled.  So worth the effort.  Now to get busy on this years quest, finishing all my photos in their albums.  The sad part is that I have not even started.  Still working on getting quiltiing done.  Yep, quilting is a stronger passion than the photos.  I have a little one graduating this coming year so I need to have…

What a Great Day!

Spent a wonderful day yesterday on a quilt retreat with about a dozen members of my guild.  Fun opportunity to chat, admire other people's projects, get caught up on what's going on in everyone's life, and also get some work done on a current project without the interruptions of real life - like husband wanting lunch, for instance!  A great time, and got another QOV almost quilted -- will probably finish it up today.  Slept really well last night, too - exhausted!

Help with Hand quilting thread

I am having a terrible time with knotting and fraying. I am using Gutermann 100% cotton thread, I use shorter lengths, I occasionally allow it to unwind as I am sewing but I still get knots where I don't want them. What am I doing wrong. Is there a better thread that I should be using? I even apply a small amount of beeswax to no avail.

Help please. I am working on Hawaiian flower blocks and there is a lot of turns and thousands of stitches.

I would appreciate any useful…

New to Blogging, New to Quilting!

I'm very new to blogging, new to quilting, but not new to trying something! I love connecting to other quilters, learning new techniques and practicing them.

This is my latest quilt, it's a Maxine quilt, backed with minky, which is my latest love!! It is so fun to quilt on and even more fun to wrap up in after it's quilted. Have been sick for a week, so this quilt…

My First Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival

This was my first trip to the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival and I must say what a great set-up.  In my opinion it was the perfect size show.  At least it was on Friday which was the day I was able to escape the office and make the trek down to Hampton, Virginia. …

Something for Everyone

For those that have not had the opportunity to visit the Virginia Quilt Museum, you are missing out on something very special.  The Commonwealth is proud to call the Virginia Quilt Museum its official quilt museum.  However, it is much more than just a repository for quilts, as its name suggests.  The Museum is a walk through time where you can see the elegant architecture of an antebellum home complete with family history, sense the Civil War soldiers who laid in its makeshift…

A quilt finished in 2006 finally goes home - Ati's quilt

In 2003-2004, George and I had the privilege to host an AFS student from Germany for a year in our home.  It was an excellent match and we think of Atilla as our son.  While Ati was with us, he was very interested in the quilt I was making for my mother, Marian Long.  He told me if she did not want it, he would take it!  So before he left, we visited a fabric store together…

En Plein Air Quilting

My artist niece, Coleen (Claire Bleu), as we call her accompanied me home from sewing retreat in SC. I was so glad for her company for the 9 hr. drive home. She had a hankering to do some en plein air (French for in the open air) painting, and in this case fiber art painting. I was eager to learn from her with fabric so we worked together on separate “paintings.”

First she…

Tales of Happy Quilting

Everyone has a story about creating their first quilt. Sometimes the first quilt was made with someone special teaching you the basics.  Other times you decided to try it on your own through trial-and-error or with an instruction book.

How did you learn to quilt? We want to hear the story of your first quilt.

Introducing the Virginia Quilt Museum

The Commonwealth is proud to call the Virginia Quilt Museum its official quilt museum. Nestled in the heart of Harrisonburg's downtown historic district, the Museum is considered a resource center for the study of quilts and their place in the cultural lives of Virginians.

The Museum offers rotating exhibits of antique and contemporary quilts from its collection, other institutions, and private collections. Additionally, the Museum works to further its educational mission by hosting…

Ideas for Memorial Quilt for My 2 Year Old Grandson

After not working on my quilting project due to a family emergency, I think I need to get back to it. I find sewing and quilting takes my mind off my thoughts and gives me some targeted direction. As soon as I finish my current project, I am going to design a memorial quilt for my grandson. I would love to hear some ideas from everyone. Colton, my grandson went home to be with Jesus 13 days ago.  He was 2 and he loved Woody from Toy Story and he loved playing with trucks and his siblings,…

Have you ever made a mistake that was so massively obvious, that you totally missed it until it was way too late and your only options were..start over or spend a day unpicking?

Well, today is my lucky day, I finally saw the mistake.

I've been working on this blue and white double wedding ring..of which I have made several in the past, so you'd think I'd have it down by now. WRONG!

I came downstairs today, all ready to put all the round blocks together, they were laid…

New Person

I am new here and hopefully I can keep being inspired to keep quilting. I have made a lot of quilts and yes I have the UFO's like everyone else I would like to finish a couple  this year. I have been sewing all my life it seams  and started quilting with my Grandma Mac. She only made patch work quilts and I remember her giving me a template to cut the squares out and with a pair of scissors. There were no rotary cutters, rulers, and mats like we have now. Thank you…

So I am about halfway through my 3 day weekend that I had planned to use solely for quilting on that stack of UFO's...how have I fared?

Well, one is finished--only had to bind it...another is in the machine and hopefully will be finished tonight.

In the meantime, I have realized that when i woke up first at 5:30 am, I should have gotten up and stayed up instead of burrowing further under the covers and sleeping til 10...My daughter didn't get up til 8:30, she says....so that…
